Farley Field
Volunteers Needed
By
Sharon Reiner
Farley Field, one of the town's four sports field, had
to be closed early this past October due to safety
reasons caused by the damage done by an infestation of
grubs. It was opened to finish the season, but the field
is severely damaged.
The field can be repaired properly this fall with your
help (and strong backs)! If we can secure enough
volunteers committed to installing new sod at Farley
Field on Wednesday, November 23rd and Friday, November
25th (yes, that is Thanksgiving Weekend), the town will
provide the sod. (you can build up an appetite on
Wednesday, and work off your turkey on Friday)
We need 12 volunteers on the afternoon of Wednesday,
November 23rd to take a crash course in laying sod; and
approximately 50 volunteers to work laying the sod on
Friday, November 25th.
We also need the following: straight shovels (spades),
wheel barrows, rakes, and steak knives or something to
cut sod. If you could lend any of these tools to the
project, drop them off at the field and pick them up
later that would be helpful, as well.
To make this happen, we must present a list of confirmed
volunteers to the Park & Recreation Commission by its
meeting November 14th or this project won't get done
this fall. That leads to the possibility of Farley being
closed in the spring or longer. we need anyone who can
show up at the Parks & Recreation Meeting, Monday,
November 14th, 7pm Town Hall, to demonstrate that the
community wants this field repaired properly now. This
will show how much this means to you. Please try and
make the meeting.
We know this is short notice and the 23rd and 25th is a
holiday weekend, but please come and help if you can and
help spread the word. Confirm your availability to
Sharon Reiner by return email
mailto:STSHBE@aol.com
or call with any questions; 295-8758 or cell, 918-4537
Please feel free to forward this to any community groups
you know of. This would also be a good community service
project for National Honor Society, church youth groups,
confirmation classes, etc.
In the past we have been able to accomplish great things
by coming together as a community - and I know this sod
laying party will be another success - BUT only with
your help!
